Early stage

Protecting the repair comes first

After many shoulder surgeries, especially rotator cuff repairs, the repaired tissue needs time to heal before it's loaded. That's why you'll often wear a sling and follow strict limits on how you move your arm for a period set by your surgeon.

Early rehab focuses on what's allowed: gentle movement as permitted, keeping the elbow, wrist and hand moving, managing pain, and practical help with dressing, washing and sleeping with a sling.

Rehab

Physiotherapy after shoulder surgery

  • ProtectionSling, pain management and permitted movement only.
  • Range of motionGradually getting the shoulder moving, first with help and then on your own.
  • StrengthRotator cuff and shoulder blade strengthening once your surgeon allows it.
  • FunctionReaching overhead, lifting, work tasks, and sport or golf if that's your goal.

Shoulder rehab is often slower than people expect. That's normal, and it's why sticking to the stages matters.

Before surgery, physiotherapy can help you keep as much movement and strength as possible, and practise one-handed routines for the sling weeks.
