Precautions
Hip precautions depend on your surgery
After a hip replacement, some people are given movement precautions for a period of time, such as limits on how far to bend the hip or cross the legs. Whether you have precautions, and which ones, depends on the surgical approach and your surgeon.
Helena works within the precautions on your discharge papers and helps you follow them in your own home, like getting in and out of bed, on and off the toilet, and in and out of the car.
Prehab
Physiotherapy before a hip replacement
Exercise before a hip replacement, called prehab, may improve strength and function before surgery. It's also the time to get your home ready: raised seating if needed, clear walkways, and practice with your walker or crutches.

Common questions
Hip replacement rehab questions
TimingWhen does physiotherapy start after a hip replacement?
Usually very early. Many people get up and walk with the hospital team on the day of surgery or the next day, then continue with physiotherapy at home. Follow your surgeon's instructions.
RecoveryHow long does hip replacement recovery take?
It varies from person to person. Many people are back to most daily activities within a few months, with improvement continuing after that.
PrecautionsHow long do hip precautions last?
That's up to your surgeon and depends on the surgical approach. Some people have none. Follow what's written on your discharge papers, and ask your surgeon if you're unsure.
Walking aidsCan you help me get a walker after a hip replacement?
Yes. Helena can assess you at home and recommend the right walker or other walking aid. Most people only need one for a few weeks after surgery, which ADP doesn't fund. If you'll need a walking aid for six months or longer, she can help with an Assistive Devices Program application.
OHIPIs physiotherapy after a hip replacement covered by OHIP?
Some people qualify for publicly funded physiotherapy after surgery, through the hospital or Ontario Health atHome. Doorstep Doc home visits are private, and many extended health plans include physiotherapy, so check your plan.
ReferralDo I need a referral for physiotherapy after a hip replacement?
No, you can book directly in Ontario. Some insurance plans ask for a doctor's note to reimburse physiotherapy, so check your plan.
