Neck pain can make normal activities difficult: working at a computer, looking at your phone, driving, sleeping, exercising, or simply turning your head.
Instead of spending time in the car and waiting in a clinic while you're stiff and sore, Dr. Alex Greyvenstein brings a professional assessment and treatment to your home.
Choose chiropractic care with Dr. Alex Greyvenstein, DC, or physiotherapy with Helena Greyvenstein, Physiotherapist, or both.
Neck pain can develop quickly after an injury or gradually as a result of everyday activities, repetitive movements, or uncomfortable positions. Common causes and contributing factors include:
Sitting for long hours at a computer
Poor desk posture
Looking at your phone for extended periods
Muscle tension or overuse
Restricted movement in your neck or upper back
An uncomfortable pillow or sleeping position
Lifting or repetitive work
Sports or exercise-related strains
Sudden movements or injuries
Whiplash from a car accident
Stress and muscular tension
There are often multiple factors contributing to neck pain. That's why treatment is based on what may be causing your pain, not simply where you feel it. A chiropractic assessment can help identify restricted movement, muscular tension and other musculoskeletal factors.
Everyone experiences neck pain a little differently. Some people feel sharp, localized pain, while others have a dull, constant ache or simply feel stiff and restricted. Common symptoms include:
Neck stiffness
Difficulty turning your head
Pain when looking up or down
Tight neck muscles
Upper shoulder tension
Pain between the neck and shoulder
Upper back discomfort
Muscle spasms
Headaches associated with neck discomfort
Pain or stiffness while working at a computer
Neck pain after sleeping
Discomfort while driving
Pain or strain after physical activity
Some people also have symptoms that radiate toward the shoulder or down the arm.

Treatment
How Dr. Alex treats neck pain at home
There isn't one single treatment that suits every person with neck pain. Your appointment begins with an assessment of your symptoms, movement, history, activities and possible contributing factors. Based on that, treatment may combine some of the following.
Joint
Chiropractic Adjustments for Neck Pain
Adjustments may be used when restricted joint movement is contributing to your pain or stiffness. An adjustment is a controlled movement applied to a specific joint to improve mobility and restore more normal movement, focusing on the cervical spine, upper back, or other areas that may be involved.
The goal isn't simply to "crack your neck." It's to find where movement may be restricted and decide whether an adjustment is right for you.
Joint
Joint Mobilization for Neck Pain
Not every patient is suited to a traditional adjustment. Mobilizations are controlled, repeated movements that improve movement within a joint. They're a good option if you prefer a gentler approach, or when a joint needs to be gradually worked through its available range. They may be used around the neck, upper back or shoulders.
Muscle
Soft Tissue Therapy for Neck Pain
Muscle tension often plays a big role in neck and upper shoulder discomfort. Dr. Alex may use soft tissue therapy, including Muscle Release Therapy (MRT), on tight or overactive muscles around the:
Neck
Upper trapezius
Levator scapulae
Upper back
Shoulders
Base of the skull
Mobility
Assisted Stretching for Neck Pain
Tight muscles can make it hard to move your neck and upper body comfortably. Assisted stretching helps improve flexibility and range of motion in the neck, shoulders, upper back or surrounding muscles, and is combined with hands-on treatment and exercises.
Between visits
Exercises for Neck Pain
Hands-on treatment is only one part of managing neck pain. Where appropriate, Dr. Alex recommends specific exercises to maintain mobility, build strength, improve posture and support function between visits. Your program is specific to your symptoms, goals and capacity, and may include:
Prefer physiotherapy, or want both? Physiotherapy treats neck pain without adjustments, using hands-on treatment, exercise and education. After an assessment, treatment may include:
Hands-on joint mobilization and soft tissue work
Deep neck and upper-back strengthening exercises
Posture and desk setup advice for your actual workspace

Too sore to travel

Oakville
Whether your neck pain comes from desk work, posture, sleep, exercise or muscle tension, it can be assessed in your own home.
Assessment and treatment at home without travelling to a clinic. Treatment may include adjustments, joint mobilization, soft tissue therapy, assisted stretching and exercises, depending on your needs.
Should I see a physiotherapist or a chiropractor for neck pain?
Both treat neck pain. Chiropractic care with Dr. Alex can include adjustments, while physiotherapy with Helena focuses on hands-on treatment and exercise without adjustments. Some people do well with one, some with both, and because we're a family-run practice, your care stays coordinated. If you're not sure where to start, ask on the 15-minute phone call.
Desk work
Is your desk contributing to your neck pain?
Hours at a computer strain the muscles and joints around your neck and upper back. Your neck may feel fine in the morning and get stiffer as the day goes on. Common contributors:
Looking down at your laptop
Working from a couch
Monitor too low or too far away
Holding your phone between head and shoulder
Prolonged sitting with little movement
Because visits happen at your home, your workstation can be looked at too, with practical recommendations on movement, posture and setup.
Sleep
Waking up with a stiff neck?
Morning stiffness is common. You may have pain turning your head, trouble looking over your shoulder, or tightness through your neck and upper shoulders.
Sleeping position, pillow height and staying in one position too long can all contribute. If it persists or keeps coming back, an assessment can show whether restricted joint movement, muscle tension or other musculoskeletal issues are involved.
Headaches
Can neck pain cause headaches?
Muscle tension and dysfunction in the neck can contribute to certain headaches. You may notice:
Headaches starting at the back of the skull
Pressure around the back of your head
Headaches with neck stiffness
Headaches that worsen with computer use
Headaches with upper neck or shoulder tension
Not every headache comes from the neck. Headaches have many causes, so a proper assessment matters.
Recovery
How long does neck pain take to improve?
There's no fixed timeline. Some people improve fairly quickly after a recent strain; others have had recurring stiffness for months or years. Recovery depends on:
How long you've had symptoms
The cause of your neck pain
Activity levels, work and lifestyle
Previous injuries
Sleep and recovery
How consistently you do your exercises
Your plan is adjusted as your symptoms and movement change.
Whether it's stiffness, muscle tension, restricted movement or desk-related discomfort, your neck can be assessed and treated without leaving the house.
